7 - “String Her Up”

After going through hair and makeup the following morning, the fifteen actresses portraying the high school seniors who are attending Natalie’s party are, according to the script, supposed to make their way to the Discipline Room. The cages on the main floor are all empty today so the warehouse is eerily silent as we’re led by another large black man in the uniform all the slave handlers and technicians wear while doing their jobs. We’ve all been fully restrained again in what is the ‘standard slave hardware’ - the script's words, not mine - and we shuffle along near a twenty-foot high cinder block wall to a doorway.

Fran told us when we began filming to keep glancing in the direction of the cages when the camera is aimed our way. Apparently, the sound engineer will add the noise that we’re supposed to be hearing in post-production, a standard practice in the film industry. I’m learning so much every damn day.

When we arrive at the door that has a sign over it proclaiming this to be the entrance to the Discipline Room, our guard, Mr. Hamilton, launches into an explanation of what we’re about to experience.

“So, because you’re all just here for a day and a half, we have to do things differently than with the standard week-long experience. On the other side of this door is one of two Discipline Rooms attached to this facility. We’ve got the full complement of disciplinary devices on hand but only one of each, so we’ll be putting y’all in holding pens to begin with. Real slaves will take priority at each station, so you might be in there waiting for some time, but we’ll try to get everyone processed as quickly as possible so you can get to your cages for the night.”

We do three takes of his speech - we’re only using one for this shot - as the camera pans across our group while we all try to look scared shitless. It’s not a stretch for me, given what we’ll be shooting after we enter the room, although, by the third take, I’m pretty much over it. I find it hard to keep my focus during multiple takes, something else I need to work on if I’m going to succeed in this world.

Mr. Hamilton goes on. “The holding pens will allow you to see how each device works. To get processed out of the room, you’ll need to choose which station you’re willing to experience. Obviously, you’ll only get to be processed when a station is vacant, so keep that in mind. Our overall facility is close to full capacity at this time so there won’t be a lot of downtime, especially at the restraint stations. The corporal punishment stations are much quicker and offer more opportunities for you to volunteer and get processed.”

Hamilton pushes the door open and we file into the ‘room’ but it’s not a room at all - we’re exiting the building. Once
